Really this is two books: a purported comprehensive(fifty years!!) history of comedy and a magnum opus of David's "amazing' life interfacing with the comedians. If this had just been a Steinberg biography it would probably still be sitting on some editors desk waiting for publication. So what we have is how much "ME,me,me me", do you include and how much of the actual comedians stories you tell. Unfortunately this turns into a comedic minefield with no explosions. it recalls Hedda Hopper, Louella Parsons, and Walter Winchell. Some of it seems hopelessly sycophantic especially in the passages relating to Jerry Seinfeld and poor me, i did not think the second coming had not yet occurred. Really the title of the book overpromises and that at best it is way too comprehensive
